Solar powering your home makes sense. Using the power of the sun, you can significantly reduce your electricity bills, feed power into the grid, and even receive electricity bills in credit!

 

The Solar Credits scheme provides rebates of up to $4,000 on a Solar Power system. And with the Victorian Feed-in Tariff, the power companies will pay you around 33c for your exported Solar Electricity, while you pay around 22c for what you consume from the grid.

How Solar Power works:

Stage 1 - Solar Modules

Photovoltaic (PV) cells in each of the panels convert photons of sunlight directly into DC electricity (similar to that which flows through your car). The greater the number of panels, the higher the energy output of the array.

 

Stage 2 - Inverter

The solar electricity flows into the inverter, which converts the DC power into the 240v AC power (identical to the power in your home). The inverter provides real-time readings in its display window. It shows the power output, the daily total, and the cumulative total since installation.

 

Stage 3 - Switchboard

The AC electricity flows into your switchboard, where the solar power runs the appliances in your home. If you are using more power than the solar panels can provide, then it draws the remainder of its needs from the grid. If the solar power produces more than you need (excess), then the surplus power is exported to the grid.

 

Stage 4 - Metering

Your new electricity meter is called an import/export meter. This means when you use electricity from the grid, the meter spins forward (as normal). When you produce excess solar electricity, your meter will spin backwards, building credit on your electricity bill

The Victorian Government's Feed-in Tariff states that you will be credited 33c per kWh (with some providers) for your excess solar electricity, yet still only charged around 22c/kWh for the electricity that you use!
